This is a plant that I would love to grow but so far I have failed. Slugs seem to be rather fond of them! Anyway, if you can't have the real thing you might as well do a painting :-) This is quite small (about 8"x8" unframed) and done with watercolour and a bit of coloured pencil for the detail.

I was sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers earlier in the year, mainly consisting of white and green flowers, a few purple sea hollies and all kinds of interesting foliage. I took lots and lots of photos and made this picture using mixed media to remind me of the bouquet and the very kind person that sent it to me. As a result of my new facebook page, I was contacted by a friend who's daughter has special needs. She asked me to paint something for her bedroom wall using pinks and purples. I chose a large canvas (60x80cm) and decided to make some flower fairies that would be big and bold to attract the little girl's attention. I also stuck hundreds of little glittery jewels on the edges of the petals so that it sparkles in the light. I was pleased with the finished picture and I hope the little girl will enjoy it. Time to move into the 21st century. I have opened a facebook page to share my artwork. It has been great to reconnect with some friends who I haven't seen for a while and by showing some of my pictures hopefully I will be able to sell some. You don't need a facebook account to look at them just follow this link https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1137016266
I went for a walk to Splash Point on a beautiful sunny morning in February - chilly but very invigorating. As I looked back towards Seaford I was taken by the clearly defined shapes made by the sea, the stones, the rocks and the man made structures so I took a photo thinking that it might make an interesting picture. I also decided to try a different style and medium, working on canvas with acrylics which I have only tried once or twice before. So here is the result. It was hard to keep it simple and focus on the shapes without getting too involved with shading and detail. I quite like it but I'm not sure how others would perceive the finished result. Any comments would be appreciated. New year, new ideas. Seaford Art Group have decided to set us a monthly challenge this year to encourage us all to try something a bit different. I'm very happy about this as it sometimes takes a bit of encouragement to have a go at something different. So January's challenge was 'Through the Window'. I decided to use the mixed media approach so my picture started with tissue and collage materials stuck to the paper as a base then coloured inks dripped on randomly, blues near the top and greens further down. Once dry I worked into it picking out shapes of mountains then adding flower details further down. For the middle distance I looked on the internet for inspiration and saw some images of little mountain villages which seemed to fit the theme, so I just drew a little church to catch the sunlight down in the valley. This is my latest mixed media painting using layers of textured papers, inks, acrylics, Inktense pencils and Neocolours. I loved the colour combinations and decided to enter it into the Seaford Horticultural Society Annual Show. The art sections were for flowers or seascapes. There were about 12 entries in the flowers section and much to my delight, mine was judged to be the winner in that category. This was especially nice for me as most of the feedback that I get is face to face from people that I know and you are never quite sure whether they are just being polite and encouraging. To be judged the winner by an independent judge was a great boost. When I left my teaching job last year my lovely classroom assistant Elaine, who I had worked with for many happy years, bought me the most beautiful pink rose which was called Happy Retirement. It flowered all through the summer and was so stunning that I took lots of photographs and then painted this picture. Acrylics on a little box canvas about 8" square. I saw a photograph of these beautiful fuchsias on an internet gardening forum. I asked permission of the photographer, Lesley K, to use her picture and she agreed. It is about 10" x 14" done with acrylic paints. I loved the colours of the flowers and the unusual camera angle that Lesley used, looking up into the flower against the blue sky. This must be the view that a bee sees! |
